The third iteration of the browser-based massively-multiplayer online game (MMO) will be playable from July 22.
The update is the game’s biggest upgrade in its 12-year history, using a new engine based on HTML5 and WebGL, resulting in improved visuals and sound, an updated camera and longer draw distances.
The launch will introduce the game’s inaugural community-based world event, The Battle for Lumbridge, as well as seasonal high scores with weekly and monthly leaderboards.
“Our pioneering use of HTML 5 technology continues to place us at the forefront of browser-based gaming innovation, and will result in a truly amazing gaming experience for players,” said executive producer Phil Mansell.
Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard added: “RuneScape gold continues to go from strength to strength, and with the launch of RuneScape 3 this year we will no doubt continue on that upward trajectory.
